Inadequate building energy consumption data has long been a barrier for building energy research, but with the rapid progress of new technologies, including the Internet of Things (IoT), it is possible to begin addressing this issue.

The project aims to explore the difficulties that may be encountered during the installation of residential energy and environmental sensors and the challenges associated with subsequent data communication and storage via IoT, by trialling residential installation of such networks. The input from project partners concerns data security and perceived security concerns from the client perspective. Barriers and solutions faced in this project are also reported. The lessons learned will be beneficial to future large scale IoT implementation.
